I did this quest last night, and we had a non-KOS cleric sitting with the giants. Here is what happens on that end:
When you turn in the harness to the broodmother, the giants repop in the same place, not outside. They then walk out to the northwest corner of the fort, and Grakl says something about an "ill wind blowing". He tells Fergul that if anything happens, he is to run to Kael to make his report. Shardwurm shows up from the direction of the fake wiz gate, eats Grakl, and Fergul runs off to the East.
