getting a bachelor's in philosophy is about 100 times smarter than going to law school unless:
1) you are going to a top 14 school
2) you are getting a full ride or someone else is paying 100% for it
3) you have any very strong personal/family connection to a firm
if any of those above are true for you then get a JD
if none of those apply to you then it is the worst life decision you could possibly make as anyone who has spend 2 seconds researching the career prospects for graduating JDs knows

"T14 or bust" isn't entirely true. Once you get into tier 2, then yeah, you're looking at bad times under normal circumstances. If you want Biglaw then yeah, T14 +U of Texas (If you live in the South) is the only intelligent decision, but for those with a specific plan in mind before law school a top 60 CAN be an intelligent decision.
Of course if you're just going to "be a lawyer" without a more specific plan then yeah, T14 or serious scholarship to a top 50 or bust.
