Just starting also, are bards decent or do they not get good till later xpacs? Was thinking maybe druid/bard or mage/necro.

Bards are fine, don't need much, and hell like 3 weeks ago found a magic lute on a vender in NK for like 300p (Eyon got it) (but I haven't seen him play in awhile) Thats pretty much the biggest piece of gear you need right there till end game ;p
There are no solid newb guilds. Either join a one of the many little pvp guilds or wait and join Nihilum if you like good organized PvE.
