Is this a thread about mental illness or libertarianism? I can't tell which. It does seem that you, Lron, have a problem with relatively small group of people who are exercising individual freedom to live their lives as they want to. I would figure that would be a cause you'd champion.
It's not a mental illness. It's in the DSM, because there's no other place to put it. The need to change genders, and deprivation of that need can no doubt drive people crazy, but a person is absolutely not mentally ill simply by virtue of being transgender.

I do not have a problem with it because, as i have stated, as long as it does not affect me directly, it is no business of mine. My problem is with their desire and longing to be treated as if they are perfectly sane and mentally healthy.
If i want to medically remove my arms and legs because I think it will make me a happier person, people would cringe in horror and tell me to get into extensive psychotherapy yet when transgendered people do something equally as horrifying (if not more) they expect everyone to just act as if their decision to mutilate their bodies is totally rational and demand that people view them as completely sane and mentally healthy.
Maybe I am just specifically talking about male's who hack off their dicks or women who remove their breasts...that specific element of the transgendered community.
With all that being said, I would never deny friendship or love or respect to anyone in the transgendered community based on them being mentally ill.
