Bards are extremely useful in raids - I don't know where you're getting the idea that they're not needed in raiding. Their resist songs are amazing.

I would personally recommend bards. They're great solo, great in groups, great in raids, and don't need amazing gear. Going with a tank is also a solid option - you can get some decent aggro weapons for a warrior for relatively cheap (couple hundred to couple thousand plat), or roll a naked SK or paladin and do perfectly well.

Bard is essential for raids. Extremely cheap too.

One thing I noticed upon playing bard is once you get running around with those drums, you'll start volunteering to run places and discover parts of zones you never knew existed. Get a pegi cloak and some drums, you won't even care when you get that travel song at 51.

Bard + Peg Cloak = great fun.

I've only done naggy/vox on my bard but its intense. Fuck up one resist twist and there goes the tanK!
