just because people did not 'know' does not equal did not exist. Thats what we are trying to figure out, seemingly fruitlessly however.

Yes, I understand we're trying (dis)prove its existence. I was simply dropping the idea that it not being well known is not dispositive of the issue. Just because no one knew about it doesn't mean it wasn't there. That's all I'm saying; some of the comments seemed to be leading towards "it would have been better know if it existed."
