not true. i tried to do the combine for the level 16 pets but couldn't combine. dev confirmed they were bugged and have been fixed pending update, only we havn't had an update for a while

This is correct. Many recipes that had vendor counterparts were broken, missing, using the wrong trivial, returning the wrong class's version, etc.
Research will see huge improvements and trivial standardizations after the update.
