Mages and shamans will always be needed here endgame for sure. Both are great first chars especially for farming. They also don't really rely on gear. Just be full mana and HP and you should be able to blast stuff down easy xp. I'd also suggest using east common lands tunnel buffs as much as possible 1-20+ to vastly speed up your xp gain. It'll also make up for the gear you'll be lacking.
