Oh I disagree - Upper Guk is amazing loot for newbs from level 5 on up. Plus, the faction issues teach you the game the hard way - which makes it more difficult but also more rewarding.
Go Ogre. Very difficult for mobs to interrupt your casting, very good stats all around.
