Be proactive and kill some bears to turn their ruined pelts into leather armour. It's a good idea to train 15 points into tailoring first.

Also, you can make a couple pp off their better quality pelt, enough to cover your early spell costs.
People are generally quite generous on the server, seeing you work for your armor and pp in EC you may end up receiving buffs and ok gear for free or cheap.
