Freeport is the city of commerce. OOC = EC Auction. Anytime you see people advertising wares you can safely assume they're somewhere by North Freeport.
Carrying large amounts of platinum is a bad idea, but you're speaking truth that spell vendors aren't conveniently located next to bank. Lots of people will find a local merchant selling gems if forced to cross wilderness with a lot of cash and suffer the conversion cost.
All that being said, you will find plenty of ocassions where you're making a beeline to a banker with a load of moolah on you. Just buff up, try for a SoW, and keep tapping that /who macro!
