I don't think anyone plays wow for the pvp, it does have a great storyline and great pve. Everybody who enjoys wow is more of a pve'er the kind of players you only see on raid day.
Darkfall was a pvp game, Shadowbane, Age of Conan, etc Wow was always a pve game it's extremely easy low risk, high reward, of course that would be attractive.
Player's are always going to enjoy a less competitive environment, everyone gets to be a winner.

WoW is much more competitive and there are more people that play it for PvP than Everquest. They force it to be competitive by giving you the opportunity to have rank and only compete against others at your skill level. If you play it enough you will get to a point where you are playing others that are at your same level. If you are just smashing keys like you said you are with your druid you should hit a ceiling pretty quick.
With all that said it doesn't mean it is more fun just because it is more competitive.
You are right when you say WoW is more of a PvE game, but the same goes for Everquest.
