The leaderboard only promotes scummy play by people focused on their leaderboard points, and has probably hurt the server more than it has helped.

These players are going to be scumbags whether there are points involved or not.
With a little intelligence you can use the leaderboard to determine who deserves the ranking and who does not. Its a useful tool in this way.
