Possibly the only benefit of the HUGE aggro radius is that I saw it coming before either of us were in casting range. I immediately ran and with swimming ~ 170 I got out onto the ice OK. Then I rooted the pet and ate the asystole that the asshole cast on me and high-tailed it to Permafrost, screaming to anyone near to GTFO.
It's all a moot point now. I found a totemic helm for 1100, and then sold the guy my ground dufrenite and banded helm for 100. So worth it.
