I finally found out why my xp was so slow. I learned about the pet xp penalty and quickly changed how much damage I do during combat. Changed a lot!

I would not worry a lot about the pet penalty on a Mage much. They kill so fast if you use a Fire Pet you can easily overcome it. I just Kill, Kill, Kill on mine. It works.
