As far as i remember the polar bears are the best mobs to hunt if you want nice loot (
http://wiki.project1999.com/A_polar_bear_cub). Look at the loot table and the quests you can resolve with them. Quite nice for such low mobs.
But in order to get xp, just kill whatever you see.
