when i used to play wow sometime ago we had a saying "madcuzbad" pretty much summarizes that whole bnet blog post

to the one who posted above me i really liked eq2 at launch it required you to quest to become something from nothing other than a good/evil race which was fairly easy you just picked mage/fighter/priest/scout and then you leveld a bit to get a feel for it but then you had to get your citizenship to freeport/qeynos or else you were stuck at like level 6. once you got citizenship you could only level to 9 until you talked to your subclass trainer and if you didnt you would cap at 9. it was merely a quest to get you to talk to the different trainers and get some info. once you did that you could not level past 19 without talking to your final class trainer. this was great imo because it required you to get familiar with the starting area and your class before you started your way to max level. basically if you rolled heals but wanted to do cleric instead of druid or even shaman and changed your mind at 9 you were still okay you didnt have to reroll that first 9 levels. then you get to 19 you have half the mystic spells and half the defiler spells(shaman) or you had half the templar spells and half the inquisitor spells (cleric) or half the fury spells and half the warden spells (druid). so if you hit 19 and thought i like this version of this healer better you could confirm and ding 20 and become that healer. sad to say they removed this from the game shortly after to the point where you just picked your class when you rolled your toon at the character screen and if you got to 20 and realized you didnt like that class you would have to reroll and level back to 20 just because the original method was too hard for some noobs.

another thing that was cool about eq2 at first was the first time you traveled/used the mariner bell your whole group had to be at the docks near the bell. next, rather than say just zoning from thundering steps to lavastorm you had to go on a instanced "boat ride" where you would actually fight monsters in a ring event and you had to survive waves or else you wouldnt get to lavastorm. then after the first time you did it you didn't have to do it again you were just character flagged for clicking the mariner bell and zoning into lava or w/e. even if you were 4/5 of the group flagged you still had to do it for the guy who wasnt flagged. this was cool though because it added to the game and was a challenge. this feature was removed quickly also due to difficulty complaints by people who didn't do all the quests and were undergeared trying to move on or underskilled.

these 2 examples among other things just show eq2 track record with having a decent system in place but they remove it to cater to people who can't read quests or npc text and are not good at playing their class.

i think what it comes down to is that saying fish for a man and he eats for a day but teach a man to fish and he will eat for life. due to profit motives the devs never wanna teach the man to fish
