Another route you can take is to upgrade your motherboard with a pci slot for your old graphics card, but have a pci x16 slot for a new card later. Look for one with a socket for an i5 processor or better. You will also have to upgrade your RAM, but that should be cheap.
If you have built systems in the past or are semi familiar with the do's and dont's of keeping your pc cleaned out, you might try over clocking. If you only open your case once every other year I wouldn't suggest overclocking.
