Certain race/class combos DO penalize the entire group. That doesn't mean they should be left out, but it's how the game works. There's a thread up somewhere about the EXP mechanics. It's not exactly what I mentioned, but in effect it's very nearly the same thing. The bottom line is that the EXP is split up to the group to make everyone level at roughly the same rate regardless of individual penalties/bonuses.
