Oh yeah, the floaty weapon isn't -bad-
But it's certainly not as strong as charm is. Plus, if you charm "kite", you get two chunks of XP for the price of one! But good old Animation's are also great for starting to break camps. Gives you a nice buffer against a mez/lull resist that you can just click "Go Away" on right before your charm spell finishes casting. Never underestimate the pet, just understand that it's like the house cat as Daywolf says.
