I messed around with fruity loops a long time ago (I prefer using actual devices with knobs and sliders though).

Take advantage of the sampling capabilities. Just grab random sound clips, add effects to them and cut em up in weird ways. Even if you aren't an amazing composer ( I sure as hell am not) you can make your music sound fresh and original simply by using unorthodox sound sources.

And Hasbinbad is right, filters help alleviate some of the monotony in most electronic music.

Fruity loops is definitely a great place to start if you want to make music on a computer. It's very user friendly and easy to master.
