If you want to be human for cosmetic reasons, consider half elf, they look really nice

The main race advantages are stats (ogre, troll), size (smaller races), sneak (halfling), hide (halfling, dark elf), frontal stun immunity (ogre) and my personal favourite regeneration (troll, iksar). Iksar gets some added AC as well. If stats or abilities are not so important for you, just go human.
Evil races (especially iksar) do have a disadvantage in their choices of available vendors, but in my view that disadvantage is easily overcome.
