Is there a rogue equivalent that isn't completely hated for PvE and is still good at killing people? No experience with this game at all, and I hear assassin types are very bad first characters. I also hear that on EQ though and never regretted playing what I wanted to play, rogue, from day 1.

All assassins are disliked in PvE. This game however doesn't center around PvE. Though IMO assassins are the hardest class to play in general. Leveling can be difficult, and RvR/PvP can be outrageously difficult (if solo) until you get the hang of it. Liiike gear, weapons swapping/poisons, when to use what styles, positioning, endurance management, picking when to fight & who to fight.
