I never really stopped since release, at least with casual play. And I don't really worry about the "hay day" either, but just the mechanics as they're better than any modern games.

I'm curious about this - which mechanics are the best? In my view, EQ did some things really great and others not-so-great.
Great:
- The rhythm of group combat (pull, fight, root, mezz, buff, all that stuff)
- Difficulty / challenge level of PvE - it's challenging in an "old-school arcade" kind of way
- Class balance & unique roles
- Beautiful world - great to explore
- Lots of race / class options
Not-so-great:
- Killing stuff the only meaningful play experience, but they wasted effort implementing a lot of non-core stuff (crafting, thief skills, quests, PVP etc.)
- All those races mean loads of starting cities and other level design that went largely un-used after the early levels
- Lots of grinding on similar / same-y content
- Competition for key loot makes it feel like waiting in line for an amusement ride
- Economy is pretty broken re: inflation, money sinks, etc.
But I am eager to hear what your take is on why it's better than most modern games.
