1) The most important focus item you need as a magician is the torch because fire pet is golden for solo xp. Also, the reclaim energy part is nice (All focus items have this reclaim energy clicky). Till 49, I would recommend water pet in an xp group due to its DD proc, so stein would be a 2nd good choice. Last but not least, Shovel and Broom are required for magician epic quest, so you might want to do them, though those could be low priority.
2) They both increase HP and level of your pet. A max pet focused has 1 more level than a max pet unfocused.
