Thinking back to when I played the first time around, here are some combos that I recollect which tended to attract newer players, or at least those which stuck out to me:

Barbarian Warrior (bonus if they use "aye" in place of "yes")
Human Paladin (includes my forum namesake character)
Woof Elf Druid (bonus if female)
High Elf Cleric (bonus if female and refers to other players as "hun")
High Elf Wizard (bonus if stoned all the time)
Halfling Rogue ("I heard it levels faster")
Half Elf Ranger (bonus if named some variant of legolas)
Human Monk (bonus if eyepatch)
Iksar Monk (bonus if name incorporates some sort of lizard motif)
Dark Elf Necromancer (norrath's equivalent of goths)

Nobody played Shadow Knights, I could never tell what race Enchanters were due to illusions, and I didn't pay enough attention to Shamans, Bards, or Mages to develop an opinion. Yeah, I listed both Monk options. Anyone else remember how Monk players would invariably regard any nice low-weight item as "monk loot"? It was the newbie class, akin to Hunters in Warcraft.

On P1999 the list would be pretty well any min-max combo, but there aren't many genuine newbies here.
