At 130k it will take casual players quite awhile before they can purchase Torpor (it took me about four years). That being said, even without Torpor (or epic) Shaman are still an awesome class, both for soloing and grouping.
The other strong option for a starting solo-able class (that's not Enchanter/Necro) would be Druid. They're not as mighty as Shaman, but they do get ports (which can be a great way to earn plat).
Other possibilities (which I'm less familiar with): Bard or Magician.
