Quite frankly it's a situation where people played by the "rules" but in real context they were dicks and cheated to get loots the mob dropped by abusing the very rules.
It's hard to not have any rules of engagement on a game like this involving loots.
The problem is when individual players bend those rules to benefit their greed and deliberately screw over others knowing full well they are doing so.
Sadly, you just have to accept the fact that humans as a whole are insufferable garbage, fueled by their own greed and this greed manifests itself not only IRL but even on games involving imaginary pixellated items.
