Welcome to P99. I highly recommend the monk for a first char if you find you like melee. Quality cheap gear combined with the ability to solo and being highly desired in groups is a good combination. I started a necro, leveled him to 24 and then I got bored of soloing and made a monk alt. Next thing i knew my monk was 60 and my necro was still 24.
That being said, its a bit of a personal choice so find what you like to play and go with it!
