yaw usury was against christian law but its not just a dark ages thing. that goes wayyyy back to Italy before Christianity existed.
usury was considered very nasty low brow business and was shunned by ALL of society. Not just plebs. Elites considered it very nasty business.
usury is also banned in Islam but you could argue they were just copying Christian policy. they designed loopholes around it in 2018. usury remains banned but with the loopholes and the rulings its pseudo legal.
