I don't know if you heard of power of advertising but its kind of a thing. It makes it hard for old style fast food joints to compete....even if they have better burgers for lower prices (realistically it would probably be 1-2 dollars more).
The only reason we have that stuff around here in Eugene, OR is because the city makes it really hard for them to get in -- especially the nice areas of town. Poor people have other problems, so they don't care whats in their burger and just go to McDonalds because of advertising.
Edit: Sit down restaurants burgers are kind of a different deal. And the fucking tipping requirement here in the USA....I mean that's another thing McDonalds lobbies for I'm sure -- knowing that tips keep people in their fast food joints and not going to sit-down restaurants.
