The reason Russians are having a bad time is because the fuckin oligarchs took over their country. It was all much better for ordinary working people when Stalin was terrorizing the social climbers to keep them in line.

A major conflict of interest in Russian elites is most of the oligarchs are Jewish and hold dual citizenship in Israel. Anyone who has been to Israel knows its chalk full of Russian nationals.

Its a difficult balance and politic not found in other countries. Russia has to hold the line against the oligarchs and that is most of the activities Putin is engaged in.
