I wouldn't say the base moved more to the left, but it's possible they're looking in that direction as a solution to being heard.
My theory is that establishment politicians are out of touch with the left base that they only hear/see the loud and vocal fringe of the left and attempt to appease it because they
think that's the base, when it's not.
So you have average, normal leftists thinking "Well, shit...we're not being represented. Let's try something different and ideologically pure."
When in reality, it's the establishment politicians who are the real problem.
That's my opinion anyway.
