Three possibilities.
1.A subset of offensive spells required you to "face" the target, and I'm just remembering it was all of them.
2. I'm confusing the "you can't see your target" when they go behind walls and such before the spell finishes with a more general spell failure described above.
3. It actually is how I remember it.
if you played a class that was often the "snarer" in dungeons back in the day you'll remember when your snare gets resisted(or you forgot to cast it in time) and they start running away and you cast again but they run right through you often making it hard to spin around and keep facing them to land the snare.
