I'm now level 8 about to ding 9 and finally getting spells.
Ended up picking up a Green Jade Broadsword in the tunnel and a tower shield from a vendor to get me started, next I'm saving up for that Banded. Thanks again

Here is a link to a guy that was advertising free banded armor to newbies and the like a couple months ago. The last post was almost a week ago, so it looks like he's still doing it. Try sending him a PM or look for him in-game to help you get started. Then when you're more established, you could try to pay it forward to the next newbie that needs a little boost.
