I think 20+ years ago you had people with experience playing MUDs, like Dungeons & Dragons, making MMORPGs. Now, you have business people trying to monetize every tiny thing in games and not concentrating on the player experience and MUDs/MMORPGs are dependent on that experience. From the Wiki on MUDs (I'm sure most of us know this already, but for those that don't):
