Yeah Slam and Bash are basically the same, other than the shield requirement and the magic weapon check coming from your shoulders. Slam skills up bash, and I haven't seen any damage differences between the two.

Shield AC affects Bash damage. Don't think anything other than skill/str/level affects Slam damage. It's just eye candy tho, even with a high AC shield we're not talking significant damage output from Bash unless you're into one-shotting orc pawns.
