This is definitely the smart/budget option (with the only cheaper option being to "hire" your friends instead with a 12-pack of beer).
I actually just drove a Uhaul home a couple days ago, after my car died while I was on vacation in So Cal, and I couldn't find a rental that would let me leave the area [You must be logged in to view images. Why wouldn't you fly? Southwest has to be cheaper/faster than a Uhaul.
