Recipes for new brewing tempers were released in June 2002
as seen here.
One of the the new tempers listed is the fiery temper, requiring essence of fire, flame agates, and imp blood. These ingredients were also introduced at this time.

flame agates now dropping off the Ice giants in everfrost - this suggests that they are a random occurance on the "medium" gem table now.

The Allakhazam entry for Flame Agate includes a
number of comments dated just after the June 5 patch.
It appears Essence of Fire has already been removed:
