The story goes that he was in a piano "duel" or competition with a rival pianist named Daniel Steibelt in Vienna around 1800. After Steibelt played a new piece of his own, Beethoven allegedly picked up the sheet music for the cello part, turned it upside down on the music stand, and then proceeded to improvise on it for a long time. The audience was astounded, and Steibelt was so humiliated that he left the room and reportedly never returned to Vienna.
