They are pretty smart over at blizzard, they had the panda idea for a long time, however waited to release the doom-pandas until they knew they had a game where the "hardcore" wow people could jump over to.
They also announced that they would "Give away d3 for free" to anyone who signed up for a 12 month wow subscription. They know once d3 releases no one will give a single shit about wow except very few, however many of these wow people do not realize this and think they will sign up to wow for 12 more months and receive d3 for free but in reality they will pay more and only play d3.
The pandas are there to drag in the single left out part of gamers that wow simply didn't appeal to, young gamers, girls (tralinas) and the asian scene.
