Even 2nd Edition was kind of crap compared to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. If you want the really iconic, Everquestesque experience, do yourself a gigantic favor and find some AD&D rulebooks.
They have superior art and simpler rules. I was GMing before I was 10 years old.
