Sion is good early game, but he's a terrible choice for late game. Once you've got AD carries with full build and AP AOE damage going off everywhere his shield goes before he can get in range to pop it. What makes Karthus such a great AP carry late game is even after he is bursted down, which will happen, he's still dishing out stupid damage with his E and Q. The only hard counters to Karthus late game are champions with knockback like Trist/Gragas/Vayne/Alistar and Sorakas Wish. The only AP mids that ever beat me as Karthus is Kassadin or LeBlanc. LB is shit late game and Karthus simply does more damage than Kassadin.
Also, lol at Annie. She's not even a viable AP carry in ranked anymore. Banshees Veil her Tibbers stun or QSS it and she's neutered because anyone with a brain isn't going to let her get in range for Incinerate.
Also, the slow from Karthus wall is just added bonus, the main reason to use it is the negative magic resist and armor.
