I had a long hard think about this and the obvious was apparent. Only charmed humanoids (undead) or elementals should be able to use weapons handed to them. Shaman pets did not pierce/slash/crush/whatever when handed weapons on live. Similarly, you shouldn't be able to charm a shadow wolf and hand it a sword and have it slash. Since you don't slash/crush/pierce you also should not be able to proc.
Inb4 I won't be grouping with charmed animals/shaman pets with mage swords before this is fixed. Cuz I will be
