The GOP got swamped because they're unwilling to adapt to the reality of the changing electorate. You're not going to win elections solely on the white male protestant vote anymore. Hell, they can't even carry single white women at this point.

Purge the right-wing nutjobs and moderate your outdated ideology on religion, immigration, abortion, gay rights, birth control access, and a batshit crazy foreign policy, or keep losing every election and continue your rapid descent into irrelevancy on the level of the Dixiecrats.
p much.

Black people have voted overwhelmingly Democrat for 20+ years now. Yes, Obama enjoyed higher percentages and significantly greater turnout than typical Democrats, but that's hardly a surprise. Democrats also historically win the Hispanic and gay votes. Obama's majorities in those demos were significant, and larger than historic trends, but hardly disproportionate. I'd say that the increased percentage amongst Hispanics and gay people is as much a reflection of an increasingly radical Republican platform as it is a reflection of any kind of racial or minority identification. And even as the percentage of each demo that the Democrats are winning has grown, the base populations have increased by significant margins.

Republican foreign policy can probably stay -- it's really not all that different from the Democrats' foreign policy. But their platforms on immigration, gay rights, abortion, and taxation are going to need to be seriously reworked. They need to seriously court Hispanic voters and stop alienating gay voters that otherwise lean right. They also need to stop scaring women into thinking they're going to have to cross borders to get abortions and stop treating taxation like cruel and unusual punishment.
