Currently Im level 10. I have a Dragoon Dirk at present and looking at up grading my weapon. I read on another post that a Crystalline Short Sword is good for a rogue? Anyway I notice that's 1H slashing so does that mean I cant backstab with it??

You cannot backstab with a 1HS. The CSS is recommended for the secondary for dual-wielding. Most recommendations assume the Ragebringer (Rogue epic) for the mainhand because its an incredibly easy epic to obtain, or it can be purchased for ~35-45kPP (low amount for this server's economy). If you do not have your epic yet, the best weapon for your primary is the highest damage piercing weapon you can find. The list of rogue piercing weapons is here on the wiki:

Rogue DPS is based on three things:
1) Weapon, already discussed. High Damage piercing weapon in Primary, best ratio (1HB, 1HS, Piercing, doesn't matter) in Secondary.
2) Haste, FBSS is the common leveling item, but the higher the haste the better. When you get your Ragebringer, you can ignore haste because RB is max item haste. Rogue Haste items are here:

3) STR gear. Mithril armor is good STR armor, and has SVM. Ravenscale is decent mid-level armor too.

All of Etris' comments are directed at the PVP server, Red99. If you are on Blue you will have much fewer issues than he discusses. If you are on red, good luck with a group-dependent melee as your first character, but if you are on Blue you should do fine.
