The series (sum)(-1)^n (where n starts at 1) is divergent (it fails the divergence test since the limit of (-1)^n, n-->infinity, doesn't exist). All that's shown in the second line is that the partial sum for any even number of terms is 0. All that's shown in the third line is that the partial sum for any odd number of terms is 1. All that's shown in the fourth line is that the partial sum for any even number of terms is unequal to the partial sum for any odd number of terms. Not an interesting result.
