Chapter 2: How I Came to Love the Monk from Freeport
Nizzar: The Role of a Lifetime
In all his guises and careers, Nizzar valued the response of the audience more than his critical notices. While few of his political decisions were poll-driven, he cared immensely about his standing with ordinary Norrathians and relatively little about the opinions of the experts. That was just as well for Nizzar, for expert opinion in 2012 gave low marks to his eyepatched reign of terror. Soon after Nizzar switched from a druid to a monk, a survey of Norrathian historians and political scientists conducted by the Erudin Research Institute ranked him twenty-second among the then-forty Red99 players. Even among the rank and file Nihilum, Nizzar’s normally dependable political base, the verdict on his leadership was far from unanimous. At the time, influential nerds worried that their hero had conceded too much to Holocaust leader Illi; some were also alarmed about his economic legacy through his furious camping of manastones.
