I second it, Enchanter is extremely fun!
As for race selection, a chanter gets illusions to pretend to be other races/creatures - this is great for shopping/questing in hostile towns, RPing and racial bonuses (for example improved vision for gnome or levitation for air elemental).

This reminds me - if you pick enchanter, no matter what race you pick, pick AGNOSTIC for your religion. NPCs will see through your illusion to your religion and hate you, agnostic allows you to go to any city with an illusion and not be hated so you can bank/vendor. My high elf agnostic ench has spent a lot of time killing ogre and troll guards yet with illusion and collaboration I can vendor and bank in both oggok and grobb.
