Changing the size of your text boxes is a common crash, especially if the chat is actively moving while you do it or you have a particularly large chat history in that window. I heard it was something about the client trying to resize ALL the chat history at once, rather than just what's visible within the bounds of the box? Dunno. Set up your UI once and lock those down.
Maybe left clicking the chat box and doing a /clear command before trying to resize would help, if you must resize them frequently?
I've never crashed while looting or opening bags though. At least, not in a way that I could replicate as being caused by looting or opening bags. Sometimes you just crash on this old client.
